Fix: Form I-485 Family-Based Flow Validation and Question Wording Improvements

We shipped a set of fixes to the Form I-485 family-based flow after users reported a few confusing validation and wording issues while completing the form.

What Happened

Some I-485 users were being blocked by fields that did not apply to their situation. The form was requiring passport or travel document details such as passport number, expiration date, and country of issuance, even when the applicant did not need to provide them.

Another issue appeared in Part 4: Additional Info. The employment and education section had two similar fields: “Employer or School” and “Name of Employer, Company, or School.” Because both were required, users had to type into both fields before they could submit the section.

We also found a wording issue in Part 9F, questions 78.a and 78.b. The online form showed 78.a as if it were only asking about unlawful presence after April 1, 1997. The official PDF question is broader: it first asks whether the applicant reentered or attempted to reenter the United States after certain events, then lists 78.a and 78.b as the specific conditions.

Effect of the Problem

These issues could make users answer differently online than they would on the official USCIS PDF.

For applicants whose passport, travel document, or visa details did not apply, the form could feel impossible to complete because it asked for information they did not have.

For Part 4, users were forced to duplicate employment or school information just to pass validation.

For Part 9F, the missing parent question changed the meaning of 78.a and 78.b. A user might answer “Yes” based only on unlawful presence, even though the actual form is asking about reentry or attempted reentry after unlawful presence or removal.

What Was Fixed

Passport and travel document fields in Form I-485 are now optional when they do not apply. Related nonimmigrant visa fields were also reviewed so they do not block submission when left blank for non-applicable cases.

In Part 4, the “Employer or School” helper field is no longer required. The actual “Name of Employer, Company, or School” field remains required, so users still provide the core employment or education information without being forced to duplicate it.

In Part 9F, questions 78.a and 78.b were updated to match the official PDF structure more closely. The shared parent question now appears above both items, and 78.a includes the explanatory unlawful-presence text from the official form.

Conclusion

These updates make Form I-485 clearer, less repetitive, and closer to the official USCIS form language. Users should now be able to complete the family-based I-485 flow without being blocked by non-applicable passport or travel document fields, duplicate employer/school fields, or confusing wording in Part 9F.
